IGP sends team to Enugu over herdsmen killings

The Inspector General of Police, IGP, Solomon Arase has dispatched a high-powered investigative team to fish out the herdsmen who unleashed mayhem on the people of Nimbo community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State, about two weeks ago. 

Arase asked the team to unravel the remote and immediate causes of the carnage. 

The newly-transferred State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ojukwu, made this known  in Enugu, while addressing Area Commanders, Divisional Police officers and other Heads of Department in the state police command. 

Ojukwu expressed regret over the loss of lives and properties during the attack on Nimbo, stressing that any person found to have been directly or indirectly involved in the killings would face the full weight of the law. 

His words: “A high-powered investigative team has been dispatched by the IGP Solomon Arase to unravel the remote and immediate causes of the incident and noted that any person found to have been directly or indirectly involved, will face the full sanctions as stipulated by the law.” 

Ojukwu, who warned all officers and men to either shape up or ship out, also asked them to live up to their responsibilities of rendering quality service to the people of the state. 

He advised officers to embrace the full tenets of community policing, which include partnership, openness, accountability and respect for human rights, pointing out that they should work hard to restore public confidence. 
 Meanwhile, hearing is expected to commence on Monday, May 16, this year at the Federal High Court sitting in Enugu, presided over by Justice Rosemary Dugbo Oghoghorie in a N100 billion fundamental human rights suit filed against the President Buhari by an Awka, Anambra State based human rights group, Human Rights & Empowerment Project Ltd/GTE. 

In the suit No. FHC/EN/CS/59/2016 filed on their behalf by their legal counsel, Francis Gozie Moneke, at the High Court Registry, the human rights group is seeking a declaration of  the court that the killing of innocent citizens of Nigeria at Nimbo community on April 25, by the herdsmen, amounts to a violation of the right to life of all those who died in the rampage.  

Similarly, town unions in the South East geo-political zone of the country, operating under the aegis of Association of South-East Town Unions, ASETU, have called on the Federal Government to find it expedient to take steps to assist the Enugu State Government in compensating the affected families of the recent attack on Nimbo community by herdsmen. 

The unions, which expressed their position through a statement signed by the Zonal Chairman and Secretary of the association, Chief Emeka Diwe and Mr. Paully Eze, respectively, commended Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State for “the maturity he exhibited in handling the attack, which was capable of triggering off national crisis.”
