Goal understands that more than one suspect package was found in the north-west section of the stadium - one of which was a pipe bomb discovered in the toilets of an executive suite.
United initially began evacuating both the Stretford End and the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand in response to the security threat discovered after 2pm.
An 'operation red code' alert was heard over the tannoy at Old Trafford during the evacuation.
Shortly after 3pm, United, on the advice of Greater Manchester Police, announced that the fixture was not going ahead and the stadium was fully evacuated.
United midfielder Ander Herrera gave an interview to Spanish radio station Cope from inside the dressing room during the evacuation.
"We are still in the dressing room it seems that we will be the last out of the stadium," he said. "We have been nervous and tense.,
The Premier League has confirmed that the fixture will be rescheduled ‘as soon as practically possible’, with United due to face Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final at Wembley next Saturday.
Following Manchester City's 1-1 draw with Watford on Sunday, United are no longer able to qualify for the Champions League even if they beat Bournemouth in their rescheduled match.
