Champions League games to be played at weekends

According to the BBC, UEFA is looking at weekend games “as it looks to maximise interest in its flagship club competition” because of broadcasting cycles, the change to the Champions League schedule would not happen for at least five years.

A UEFA spokesman confirmed that the European governing body is talking to stakeholders and sponsors to know the future of the Champions League.

He said: “We are in constant dialogue with all stakeholders and any decisions will be taken in agreement with them. “It is far too early to speculate about changes to the formats of our club competitions.”

The Champions League, previously known as the European Cup, has been played as a midweek competition since 1968. Its final was played in midweek until 2010 which now takes place on a Saturday.

Weekend games could be staged at times more suited to the television audience in the Far East but would require changes to domestic schedules.

The current holders of the Champions League are Barcelona who were eleiminated at the quarter-final stage by Atletico Madrid this season.

Atletico face Real Madrid in the final which will be played on May 21.
